The importance of art direction
What is art direction?
Art direction is the key to creating an impactful and coherent universe around a brand or message. In fact, without a defined art direction, it’s difficult to bring a photo or video project to fruition, no matter how big or small.
It’s under the supervision of an art director that a project can come to life. He or she represents both the vision of the project and the link with the client.
It’s a job that demands passion and creativity, to propose a universe compatible with the customer’s brand identity and vision.
The different stages of an audiovisual project
An audiovisual project, whether photo or video, involves several stages.
First, there’s the briefing with the customer. This stage is essential for understanding the client’s needs and creating a moodboard together.
Then comes the proposal stage. Based on the customer’s recommendations, the art director makes several proposals in an attempt to find a vision that matches the customer’s own. He may use a storyboard to support what he says and put his thoughts into images.
In this third phase, and by no means the least, once briefed and prepared, the teams move on to the technical stage of the project. From set design to lighting and camera angles, everything must be taken into account to make this a unique production.
The fourth and final phase is post-production. This is generally when the customer’s project takes on a more concrete form. Put together, the rushes or raw photos that have been retouched take on a whole new dimension.
The different components of art direction
Visual aesthetics at the service of narrative
The main objective of art direction is to create a world that is coherent with the project’s story. It plays a fundamental role in creating a coherent visual universe that supports the narrative.
Aesthetic choices, such as the different uses of lighting and sets, or the stories told, reinforce and amplify the audience’s emotions.
The importance of colors
The color palette used in an audiovisual project can have a significant impact on the visual experience. Each color choice must be carefully thought out to reinforce the emotions and symbolism present in the images.
In particular, brands play on the colors of their packaging to convey specific emotions to their customers.
Creating ambience through scenery
An essential element of good scenography, sets help create a universe, an atmosphere, around a defined script. Differences in texture, color and perspective, as well as the positioning of objects or mannequins, add a whole new dimension to the story being told, allowing emotions to be conveyed by playing with all the spectator’s senses.
The influence of art direction in audiovisual projects
Essential to any audiovisual project, art direction gives life and meaning to the project. In particular, it adds an aesthetic dimension through colors, sets, clothing and music, reinforcing the storytelling.
Transporting the public
Art direction has the power to create visual and creative worlds that are unique to each project. Whether it’s the choice of colors, decor or music. Each aspect has its own importance, delivering a particular message to viewers and immersing them in the story being told.
